Live Aboard Moorage - 2006/06/23 05:49
Hi, we're new to this site and I want to pass along some info that might be useful. My wife, Lynne and I liveaboard our 35 ft Ericson sloop in downtown Vancouver. We moved aboard 3 years ago and really enjoy the lifestyle. We still have to pay the bills so both of us work full time. Living aboard allows us the luxury of a 2 minute commute to our respective offices, or even better, a 20 minute walk after an Aquabus ride! When we first came to Vancouver (from Calgary - we wanted to be liveaboards) we immediately found liveaboard moorage at a private 12 slip marina on Granville Island at Pier 32. It was quite pricy and sat in the shade of the Pier 32 building for most of the day. We joined the False Creek Yacht Club after discovering that they allowed 10% of their marina slips to be "liveaboard" members. They have a beautiful marina on the downtown side of False Creek (the sunny side!) and we are legal liveaboards, paying city taxes as such and having the little licence plate to prove it! Our neighbour, another liveaboard, is the Rear Commodore Marina and he just informed us that we have 3 liveaboard vacancies in our marina right now. That means that any 3 club members can choose to live aboard his or her vessels and be completely legal. I don't think that we have many slips available currently, but the turnover is surprisingly rapid and members are put on a waiting list for availability. Big slips come up much less often but 32 and smaller are quite common. Anyway, I've been going on for a while...so, if anyone is interested in becoming a member and living aboard here, let me know and I'll arrange to get you the info you need along with contact info.
cheers,
Mike and Lynne Gritten
