May and June have brought some sad and some good news to boaters along the coast. Go to this Archive

June 20, 2005

More gleanings from Bruce Campbell - June 18th:

B.C. Central Coast:

  • Lagoon Cove is for sale. They are planning a Canada Day special party and rendezvous with Capitol Yacht Club out of Sidney, BC.
  • Minstral Island has new owners.
  • Restaurant food at Wild Foods in Sointula has great steaks and according to one boater, "the best fries he has ever tasted".
  • Update on Tammy, Bob, Mitch and Katrina formerly of Namu, BC: Blackcreek is now home. Blackcreek is between Campbell River and Courteney. Tammy works at Walmart, Bob is logging, Mitch is in school and Katrina is going to school in Langley. Kody the dog still lives in Namu.

B.C. North Coast:

Hartley Bay has new hiking trails

Other news:

Landsdowne mill and farm in Sointula, producers of wonderful cucumbers, tomatoes and bell peppers suffered a bad fire last weekend which destroyed the mill, their stockpile of lumber and a couple of the greenhouses. It is a real loss to the family run businees and to the community.

Sointula is preparing for the annual Artopia July 8 – 10, 2005

  • Arts and Crafts Show
  • Self-guided Studio Tours
  • Artist Workshops
  • Historical Walking Tours
  • Museum and Forge
  • Pancake Breakfast
  • Barbeque Lunch
  • Utopian Dinner
  • Weekend of events, food, music, dance!

Port McNeil:

ORCA FEST
Port McNeill’s 6th Annual community festival. Saturday, August 13, 2005

Tip from Jack and Linnea on Hermitage:

Overwaite food store in Port Hardy will deliver you and your groceries to the dock.

Passages:

Peter Doherty, passed away suddenly May 24th, 2005. Peter was a long time liveaboard and cruiser and offshore sailor. He and his wife Glenora had spent the last few years sailing offshore enjoying retirement. Peter, a long time member and former Commodore of the Vancouver Bluewater Cruising Association (1993-1996) will be remembered for his music, wit, kindness and his love of family to name but a few.

Glenora and family have posted information on their website:

Gossip:

Bruce Campbell Reports
BC coast news:
Big Bay: (Desolation Sound) No more a public fuel dock, but completely private.
Shoal Bay - Sounds like the showers and laundry will be in this summer. There is even an outside shower with a spectacular view! No more hamburgers, but potlucks are planned.
Port Mcneil: No Laundermat!!
Sointula: Two washing machines in good repair and two driers in a clean facility which includes showers and washrooms at the head of the north dock.
Moorage is 60 cents/foot per day. Electricity and water is available.
Namu: Tammy and family are no longer in residence. For those who benefitted from their warm and informative presence, this is sad news indeed. We wish them well in Vancouver island life.

Outrage:

Thanks to the short sightedness of the BC government years ago, the "Park within a Park" resort at Hakai Resort on Calvert Island/Pruth Anchorage, has now banned dogs from the trail to West Beach and does not allow trail access after sunset. West beach is known for its spectacular sunsets and this closure of the trail will leave the beach access from Pruth Bay solely to private members access at that time. Please ask Parks Canada to create a new trail for access to this PUBLIC beach. Please let us know if you have updates to this information.

Bernice and Gene report:

heard from friends:
Port McNeill: Diesel--$0.87CDN/ltr.--about $3.00US/G.
Major problem was that we could not do laundry. The only laundromat broke down and the owner elected to close rather than fix things. The community really depended on it, and people are up in arms. A local firm plans to build a new one and have it open by early June.
